You heard it right: you can now use the Smooth 4, in all its tactile glory, with Filmic Pro on both Android and IOS. This is a Big Deal. Let me tell you why.
The Zhiyun Smooth 4 is easily the most ambitious mobile gimbal on the market. Where other brands keep things simple, the Smooth 4 offers tons of buttons and features. It even has a zoom/focus wheel which can only be found elsewhere on more professional camera gimbals. The hardware is second to none.
What let some users down, however, was the software. Personally, I love the ZY play app. It isn’t without its quirks, but once you get your head around it it is very feature rich. Unfortunately not all of those features translated over to Android. Through the ZY play app, you were stuck with HD filming, even if your Android phone supported 4k. The compatibility ranged from near-perfect to crippling depending on your phone model and make.
But now, ladies and gentlemen! Now, we have Filmic Pro. If you’re unfamiliar with this app, I’ll keep it very simple: it’s the best mobile filmmaking app on the planet. I’m not exaggerating here. It isn’t even a close competition. Filmic Pro is award winning, and it’s the absolute best solution to give you complete control over your mobile phone’s camera.
So now we have this match made in heaven: Smooth 4, with buttons and dials for days, begging to be properly utilised, and an epic piece of software to control it with. If I sound like I’m getting giddy, I am, dammit. I’ve been wanting this compatibility since the Smooth 4 was a pre-production dot on the horizon.
Now, Android users, such as myself, can shoot 4k and use the zoom wheel all in the same app.
The buttons work amazingly. You can control the interface using the Smooth 4 buttons without ever really needing to touch the screen. This is particularly handy in bright conditions, and it cuts down on those annoying finger marks too.
This is a classic example, I think of two tech giants playing to their strengths. It really is a nerdy match made in heaven, and I for one can’t imagine using another mobile setup.
… Until the Smooth 5 comes along, of course.
