What is “Negative Space?”
“Negative space” in photography uses emptiness in the scene in a creative way. The vast emptiness emphasises your subject and makes your subject stand out even more. It’s often thought of as quite a minimalistic style of photography, but don’t be fooled! It can be quite tricky to master, and sometimes takes a bit of planning and thought. There are some brilliant examples in the prompt video if you’d like some inspiration! You can apply negative space to any style of photography.

FAQs
More info on the photo contest!

Absolutely not! Any camera is welcome! Your phone, your DSLR, anything you have access to. This is about the photography rather than the gear.
-
It IS! I am happy to post prizes to anywhere in the world.
However, if you win, and you know you are in an area that isn’t great with receiving packages in the post, and think you might not receive it, you can have the option of exchanging a physical product for a digital alternative. Do let me know. It’s up to you to decide.
If I go ahead and send a physical product with your go-ahead, and you don’t receive it for whatever reason, I won’t be able to send a digital alternative, and no alternative prizes will be offered. -
First of all, my mailing list! make sure you’re signed up! You’ll also get access to the monthly video critiques of the top ten images too. Then, I will slide into your DMs on Instagram. I’m @emilymaylowrey over there. It isn’t compulsory at all to follow me, but you can if you like!

Instagram doesn’t let me know the metadata, so there’s no way for me to check. However, this contest is all about getting out there NOW with your camera, so I’d much prefer it if you submitted only new photos!
If you do want to be sneaky and submit older photos, you won’t be disqualified or anything, but it isn’t really in the spirit of the contest! -
As you probably know I am an older camera enthusiast! Some prizes will be older cameras. I will do my best to source the very best quality cameras I can, but because they are usually older, there may be slight wear and tear. They will always be in full working order!

Instagram has changed the way tags work… annoyingly! You can only see the Top Posts. But fear not, I use a piece of external software to track EVERY entry, so I can see your photo there even if you can’t on Instagram. If you would prefer, you can submit your image via the form above instead
-
No. Only single photo posts will be accepted. I can’t accept a carousel of several images. But you can make separate posts and submit more than one image.
-
You can! However, I’d much prefer it if you’re picky. This isn’t a lottery situation where more submissions make it more likely to win. Good, thoughtful photos will make it more likely for you to win! So yes, you can submit more than one photo, but be picky.

If you’re in a top spot one month, I will likely share your image on Instagram, on my YouTube channel, and of course in the video critique. I will ALWAYS credit your work, and you retain all ownership of your images. I will credit with your Instagram handle unless you tell me otherwise.
-
YES! You can now submit your images via my online form, rather than Instagram. Either way will count, so please choose one or the other.
-
You’re in luck! You can now submit your images directly to me instead video the form above.
