A (much better than average) week in the life of a wedding photographer

What a week! I shot a beautiful castle wedding at Blairquhan Castle in Scotland, then with only a day in between I was off to Switzerland for the Evolve wedding videography retreat.

Here’s the video if you’d like to see it in that format. If not… let’s jump in!

What. A. Venue! Honestly, what a venue. The couple were lovely enough to put me and my business partner Martin up in the most beautiful cottage that could sleep at least 900. I mean, that’s a bit of an exaggeration? But not by much!

The wedding went wonderfully. The couple were just so laid back and happy, and the venue was out of this world. I really felt like part of their family for the weekend.

On to Switzerland

That isn’t a sentence I get to say very often so I’m totally going to milk it today! After quite a long drive home, it was a mad-dash to get the correct currency (somebody may not have realised that Switzerland takes Swiss Francs and not Euros…) and pack, and back-up the wedding ready for some editing on the plane.

Before I knew it I was off. Of on a solo adventure with my camera, my iPad, and my notebook! What more does a gal need?

I edited a good portion of the wedding on the very punctual and lovely Swiss trains in my iPad. I felt like an absolute boss, I’m not going to lie. It was just so special watching the beautiful lakes and scenery whizz by while I was warm and happy with my photos and my Apple Pencil.

The Evolve Videography Retreat

The retreat — the Evolve Wedding Videography Retreat — was such a great experience. The location — Grindlewald — was just amazing. Yet again I had the most lovely space all to myself that I almost certainly did not deserve.

The views from just the windows as we worked were jaw-dropping, so it wasn’t long before I ventured off alone for a photo walk.

I learned so much, and if you’re a wedding videographer and would like to up your game I’d definitely recommend the Evolve videography retreat. We covered everything from marketing, branding, and initial correspondence, right the way through to physical camera positions during a wedding ceremony and the nuts and bolts of editing a high-end film.

Loved every minute of it. The group were great! We all got on so well and it was a lovely wine-filled bonding experience.

I came back so excited to update my workflow, my websites, and… well just about everything really. There’s always something to improve and to strive for when you’re running your own business!

So there we go. A fun week for sure! They’re definitely not all like that — could you imagine?! — But this was absolutely one of my highlights of the year!

I shot all the photos in this article on the Lumix S1. You can check it out on Amazon here.
