I've been a wedding photographer since 2012, and a wedding videographer more recently since 2016. It is, absolutely, the most rewarding job I've ever had. Every day is completely different. There are crazy times, where you're rushed off your feet and losing your hair, and then there are times when you haven't had a job in weeks and you're wondering whether it was all some sort of fever-dream after all.
As it's August, I'm well into the wedding season right about now. Which is probably an 8 out of 10 on the workload scale. There are consults for next month's couples, pre-shoots for next-next month's couples, edits for last month's couples, photo-books to design for last-last month's couples, weddings for this month's couples, and double-barrelled wedding weekends galore.
It's also the second year I've been doing this entirely full time, and also the most bookings I've ever had in a year. This is all amazing stuff. I'm so happy. I mean, it's been a long time coming after all! 2012-Me, with four weddings under her belt as a second photographer, would be overjoyed to know it'll all finally work out.
This is also the first year that I've attempted to run a weekly vlog and blog alongside all this madness. Oh, and I don't talk about it in this corner of the internet very often (for obvious reasons), but I have another work/passion commitment: I write books. Of the fiction variety. I have for as long as I can remember. I've been signed with a literary agent for a number of years now, on the long and arduous journey to publication. My agent is lovely and talented and eternally patient, but it's ALSO time for me to hand in a first draft of the next project we're working on. So I'm writing a book too. You know, in between all this other stuff. Why the hell not?! Who needs sleep?
So needless to say, I'm ever so slightly stressed.
But I'm also aware that this is SUCH a first world problem. How can I moan? Oh, I'm so stressed. I'm running my own business which is finally thriving after many years of bobbing along, I'm writing a book I've always wanted to write (with a photographer protagonist, no less! Could it be any more perfect!), and I'm working late into the night editing for my YouTube channel, which is just about the best and most unexpected thing that's ever happened to me. So yeah. No leg to stand on, Emily. Get your head down and get to work!
I love love love the little community we're making together over on YouTube (and Facebook) by the way. And know that come winter, when I'll have more time, I'm jumping back into YouTube land with both feet and kicking some digital ass.
And, anyway. Whenever I'm feeling a little delicate or low on headspace? I should really remind myself that this time 18 months ago I was doing all this AND working full time for Panasonic. So yea. I really can't moan, can I?
So what is this blog post? Well, I'm checking in and saying hi. Saying I've not forgotten this little website of mine, and I've certainly not forgotten my YouTube channel. I'm uploading weekly, business as usual, even if it kills me. I have lots of cool ideas cooking somewhere in the back of my head, and of course with all these wonderful weddings, I have loads of great footage to show you! I can't wait. Micro four thirds has been kicking butt this year for me. I've loaned new lenses, and really got to grips with getting the best out of the system. I can't wait to share my findings with you all.
